On Monday, in a post called The Spaces In Between Us, I wrote about a song that weaved perfectly with the theme of my blog and the spirit behind my four novels.
When I heard the song for the first time and read its back story, I felt singer/songwriters Jan Garett, JD Martin, and Lisa Aschmann had put into words much of what I was trying to say and how I was trying to live my life.
With the artists' permission, I now share the song with you. To hear it, just click the link The Spaces Between Us.
(For the lyrics, refer to the above link to Monday's post.)
The song's lyrics that especially touched me describe "the spaces in between us" as:
- "The breath I take before I sing"
- "A symphony without a sound."
- "The vast potential of the heart."
My Thursday Two Questions to you are:
- What song most closely exemplifies the spirit behind what you do and how you live your life (or simply, what's your favorite song)?
- What words or stanzas of the song are especially significant to you?
As always, thanks for stopping by.

1. I have so many favorite songs that it's difficult to choose one.
2. My friends recorded a song about San Francisco in 2005 called "On A San Francisco High" The stanza that always gets to me is:
There's no other City that can take my breath away/It's like Paris by the ocean on a perfect Summer's day.
It brings a tear to me, just typing the lines.
Hi Poetic Shutterbug. San Francisco indeed takes the breath away. "Like Paris by the ocean on a pefect Summer's day." Nice. I, too, have many favorite songs, but none come as close as "The Spaces In Between Us" to the theme of my work as a writer.
Many favorite songs but one that has been with me from my backpacking days in GA and the Alaska days as well is John Denver's Poem and Prayers and Promises. I love the entire song but the line I remember most, "I'd like to sail away And dance across the mountains of the moon."
This song has been sung around many campfires with some really good friends.
Hello SquirrelQueen. I love John Denver, and need to re-introduce his music into my home. I'll look up "Poem, Prayers, and Promises." His music was very spiritual, if I remember correctly--and soothing. Thanks for the reminder.
I also have too many songs I like, but mostly run back to classical music. Though they are no words, I can hear it in my mind and it just tugs at my heart. Does it make sense?
Great song. Thanks for the link!
I love the music of Angelique Kidjo, as well as a huge list of eclectic stuff. But Angelique always inspires me.
Hello Icy BC. Yes, what you say makes a lot of sense. some songs need no words to get their message across. Sometimes I use classical music in the background when I write to set a certain mood.
Hi Alison. I'll have to look up Angelique Kidjo. I've never heard of this artist. Thanks for the tip.
1) My favorite song is Amazing Grace. The whole song has so much meaning in life, generally.
2) The one that speaks to me is "then sing my soul, the Lord my savior". I use it almost every morning.
Hi DoanLegacy. I LOVE Amazing Grace. Everytime I hear it, I cry.
There are many songs that speak to me, most of them gospel like "One day at a time, sweet Jesus, that's all I'm asking from you"...I find myself humming this during particularly trying times and another gospel song I love is "God is not finished with me yet" which talks about how we are unfinished work with our Creator being the designer. Could we have a better artist?
Hi Judy. I can see why "One day at a time," works for you. This song could easily be a motto/theme for one's life. Same goes for "God is not finished with me yet." Yes, He's the perfect artist!
I am moved by many love songs, especially the GENTLE songs sung by heavy rockers. They just know how to bring on the emotions.
But lately I am singing a lot of nursery songs with Trinity ;-). I think one of our favorite is Frere Jacques. In Vietnamese translation, it is a about butterflies...and how a child is admiring them fluttering about. The song is soothing and very innocent, so I like to sing to it when I need a little inspiration.
Hello Self Sagacity. Gentle songs that bring out the emotions and soothing nursery songs work for me. I just read in today's paper that psychologists are finding a "significant trend toward narcissism and hostility in popular music." How sad. Just when we need to emphasize harmony and togetherness. Guess that's another reason I like "The Spaces In Between Us" and old songs like "Ebony and Ivory" by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Thank you for your comment.
